That answer will depend on a number of factors. For instance, the retiree who already has their financial future taken good care of with an adequate retirement plan may want to devote their time to volunteer work where they can use the skills they learned during their ''working'' years to benefit others. However, there are many who are retiring today who do not know how they will continue to make ends meet.
For this latter type of older individual, there may still be a position with their present company whether that is in the current capacity or one with reduced responsibilities. Even though 65 is the recognized age for retirement, there is no hard and fast rule that says you have to discontinue working at that age. Reasons for continuing to work differ with each person, but often medical benefits are the overriding concern.
It is not unusual to see an individual who is retiring from one position will often decide to start their very own business. Some choose to relocate to a place they could only dream about before, like an island hideaway where they open up, or take over ownership of a resort hotel or bed and breakfast in a popular destination spot.
Then there are those retiring seniors who choose to continue in an area of their expertise even though they no longer work as a company employee. For instance, a retired police officer may choose to instruct others in personal safety with seminars. Opening a tutoring business would be perfect for a teacher who has been working with children for most of their lives.
Consulting is another specialty area where those who have spent a lifetime learning how to do their job well can share their knowledge with others while at the same time satisfying their desires to continue to be productive. This type of work can be done on a full or part time basis, and can be done working through another company or as a business opportunity for those with the entrepreneur spirit.
For those who love to travel, but find it difficult to do so after retirement, there are opportunities on cruise ships for those who love to dance or take pictures. Some ships offer free travel arrangements in exchange for services as dance partners for other passengers or photographers. There are often positions in gift shops as well, and these and more opportunities will provide the necessary finances for having a good time.
Retiring does not have to become boring and humdrum for those who know how to go about continuing to make every moment count.
