Many times, there is no need to leave the company that one has been working with for a while. For the retiree who has spent a lifetime developing their knowledge in a particular industry, there is always the opportunity to turn their expertise into a business. A consultant can hire themselves out to businesses on a temporary basis to share their experience and help other businesses grow.
It may interesting for the soon to be retired person to know that 51 percent of the workforce in 2010 was 40 years of age or older, and 20 percent of the labor force will be at least 55 by 2020. That means that even more companies will be encouraging older people to return to the work a day world.
